A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that freelancing online is a quick and painless way to make money online from home. While you can make a full-time career of freelancing, it is not quick or painless. But if you can get through the initial difficulties and continually improve your skills and client list, you can do it, and it will be very satisfying.

Online freelancers include graphic artists, writers, designers, programmers, transcriptionists, and translators, to name just a few. It is also possible to freelance as a scientific or engineering consultant provided you have the right connections and a good reputation. You have to be willing to start out by practically giving away your work, but if you re good, you ll eventually build up a stable of good clients and make money online for reasonable rates.

There are several ways to start. If you are well-connected in your community, you can always ask business owners if they need someone to write copy or design logos or ad campaigns for them. Starting out this way helps you avoid some of the super low-paying jobs you re more likely to pick up on through freelance sites. But even if you don t have the connections you need, you can build them up from scratch with work and determination.

Signing up with a freelancing site is the first step. Most allow free sign-ups, and most have premium memberships that may cost from $10 to $20 per month. The advantage to the premium memberships is that you are usually allowed to bid on more projects, including projects that aren t advertised to non-premium members. Buying one or two months of premium membership may be worth it at the start in order to bid on better jobs.

Bidding will be your full time job at first. Always check out the reputation of the buyer who needs your services. Most freelancing sites have feedback pages so that you can find out if others have had good or bad experiences working with various buyers. If you bid on and accept a job with a buyer who doesn t have a good reputation, you risk not getting paid for your work with little recourse.

Once you get your first job, follow the buyer s instructions to the letter (even if you think you know better), and turn in your work on time, or sooner if possible. Give them your best work, even if you are only getting paid a little. Their positive feedback about you makes it much easier to land the next job, and the next. Once you are to the point of regularly accepting work, and have a good feedback record, you can start charging more, and will have an easier time finding clients outside the freelancing website.

If you work hard, turn in your best work, and meet deadlines consistently, soon you will have a stable of several clients who provide steady work and pay on time. Within a few months you can have enough work to keep you busy full-time. From there it is a matter of honing your skills and further building your reputation so that you can work at home and earn a living.
